Skywatch Friday California Grass

Not THAT kind of grass! The try to cover the lumpy brown spots left from major plumbing dig sort of lawn grass!

I put out Winter rye and topper early this month to get a little green going and was surprised to find myself watering every other day due to the very warm and dry January we had had so far this year. I was worried the seed would not take due to the middle 70 to 80 degree temperatures since it is Winter seed.

Finally there is a haze of new tender green shoots rising from the soil! They took their time basking just under the topper but here they are the new Winter Rye seed lawn sprouts of 2012,welcome to the front yard,I will bring you some friends from Bermuda in the late Spring.

The sky which has been the hazy blue you see above is about to turn cloudy for the weekend and give the new grass a drink of unclorinated water.

I think I will make a big pot of Navy Bean soup this weekend and watch the grass grow!

The Adipose is no more

Yes friends it is true,the yard and stone are once again safe. The little Adipose seemed to have suffered an “Eye-splosion” of sorts and met its demise.

I am guessing the postal carrier may have stepped on it!

I am now returning to maintaining a fat free yard environment.

Winter Branches Skywatch Friday

At least the deciduous trees have remained bare branched this week. Those ornamental pear and plum trees that have no idea how to behave because the very root stock they come from is disturbed have been leafing and blooming as if it is Spring. In their defense the temperatures have been very warm even for a Southern California version of Winter. Won’t they be surprised when we have our normal cold snap in February and rain throughout March!

Adipose update #2

I was not the only one around here disturbed by the strong wind conditions overnight.

The Adipose dismounted the stone and made for the edge of the front porch.

I remain wary.

Day Moon Skywatch Friday Adipose update

Moon rise Southern California. This Day Moon crested the hills between Norco and Riverside around 3:30 in the afternoon while early January temperatures were in the middle 80s.

Adipose Update: Still lurking in same area. The unseasonably warm days are not causing it to flee. Apparently mad dogs and Englishmen are not the only ones who partake of the noonday sun.

An Adipose Awaits

This Adipose arrived the evening of December 25th,as the really terrifying Dr.Who creatures are wont to do. I have a certain amount of respect for the BBC because in the middle of Christmas joy and cheer they choose to scare the pudding out of London residents by airing a wonderfully frightening Dr. Who special. Things always work out in the end he IS the Dr. after all!

Today is the second day of the new year 2012 and the little Adipose still lurks on the large stone in the front yard.I kept an eye on it as it quietly watched me re-seed the grass and add topsoil. Note: The Adipose does not mind a shower as I accidentally sprinkled it when watering the lawn.

If the situation changes I will post results if I am able.

Skywatch Friday On the Road

These photos are of the Arizona desert which we were driving across on the way home from a holiday trip last week.

They are right out of the camera and I am surprised at the quality considering they were both taken from the backseat of a vehicle going about 75 mph!

The Palo Verde Nuclear Power Plant under a large steam cloud on a chilly afternoon. This is the largest nuclear plant in the United States and also the only one that does not border a natural large body of water. The cooling is managed by use of treated sewage water from nearby cities which is treated again at the plant then held for evaporative cooling in an 80 acre reservoir. I always know I am almost to Phoenix when I see the columns of steam from the cooling towers.

The beginning of a classic Southwestern sunset to share and enjoy.

It is already Hanukkah,today marked the Winter Solstice and Christmas Day is upon us this weekend.However you celebrate may it be happy,merry,peaceful and conclude with a feast!

December 2011 Full Cold Moon

December 10th marked the Full Cold Moon which also will mark the completion of my documentation of each Full Moon of the year 2011.

This moon is called Cold for the obvious reasons,that December has welcomed Winter fully and the true cold has settled in the Northern Hemisphere.This is sometimes called the Long nights Moon as well since the moon is visible for longer than at other times of the year.

December 10th 2011 was the occasion of a full eclipse of the full moon visible from the Western United Stated,Canada and most of the Pacific rim. Southern California viewed the eclipse at 6 am Saturday morning. I did get up to check on the site but was disappointed by fog rolling up the canyon to the West.

Skywatch Friday A rather blustery week

A little over a week ago our neighborhood had new transformers installed as part of So Cal Edison’s infrastructure upgrades. A couple of days later Southern California was hit with very cold and in some areas 70-90 mph winds. Power was knocked out to thousands of residents in multiple counties. Pasadena and Baldwin Park were hard hit,trees and lines down,homes and shops damaged even Colorado Blvd had to be closed to traffic due to dangerous conditions. The city leaders assure us all will be cleaned up,repaired and perfect again by New Years day and the Rose Parade.

Our power stayed on(Thank you Edison!) but the last section of 40 year old wooden fence slammed down into the alley during the first night of wind. These were not the Santa Ana winds we normally get around here,they were cold and coming in from the other direction,NNE,stressing things that were not used to leaning that way.

On the upside the alley is clean and I have learned to set a post in cement and hang the gate up on said post. Two more sections will follow at a later date!
