This Monday is July Forth , Independence Day Holiday here in the USA. This scene of the flag snapping smartly in the breeze was taken at Evergreen Cemetery in Riverside California. I think this photo about sums up the 4th of July for me, the dignity and service of those who have gone before us,the caring for of their surroundings as well as our own,the flag of our nation above us all. This place was not always so Green and pleasant, it had fallen to a tumble down state and was the domain of ground squirrels and vandals a decade ago. A group of classic car guys (Club name is “Old Farts Racing” Really!) formed a non-profit to support the old cemetery and held car shows to raise funds for restoration . As you can see they have worked wonders and done a service to the area.
The crispy brown hillside beyond Evergreen is Mount Rubidoux where in the Spring Easter sunrise services are held and in the Summer fireworks are launched from the top to entertain the valley below. Betting pools are formed as to the minute after 9pm that the mount will catch fire…it happens every year . Fire crews are up their with hoses at the ready to quash any stray embers from falling rocket debris but still a couple of acres of dry brush goes up yearly, we just call it “weed abatement” by the city of Riverside.
Have a great weekend Skywatchers and those of you in the USA have a safe and happy long 4th of July weekend too!
