This ABC Wednesday post was easy to choose since I am writing about Signage and this was perhaps the most widely known roadside advertisement of the 20th century, the Burma Shave signs!

From 1925 to 1963 these well versed signs entertained and amused Americans as they traversed the many highways now crisscrossing the country.

The signs not only reminded  drivers to use their product they encouraged safe driving habits, slowing for schools, supporting victory gardens and generally taking care of yourself and your neighbors.

The original signs are long gone these days but reproductions pop up by the highways and are printed for home and garden decor to carry on the theme of a time when reading the verse every few hundred yards was a fine travel game.

Books have been written about the signs and their witty  rhymes, just look up Burma Shave on Amazon!

  3. Great and unique choice for B, Janis. – we could do with a little more humour in our advertising these days. I love the leap year one…..

  4. Yup, making me feel old too.
It was always fun to discover the signs along the highway.
