Medallion Homes Mid-Century Modern Marvels

56 years ago in October of 1957 the electrical industry launched their  “Live Better Electrically” ad campaign to help sell Modern all electric homes known as Medallion Homes. All the lighting, water heating and cooking appliances as well as heating and air conditioning were powered by electricity.

Most of these homes were cutting edge in design and thoroughly Marvelous to behold.

Many survive today and are time capsules of Mid-Century Americana since most were built as tract homes and theme neighborhoods as suburbia rolled out across the landscape in the 1960s and 1970s.

Some of these homes had specialty electrics like intercoms, record players and built in vacuum cleaning systems to add to their modern magnificence!

How cool is that! Our electricity went out last weekend during a storm when a transformer blew and started a fire down the street. It’s amazing how quiet it gets when that little white noise of a hum is not present. What would we do without electricity?

  2. A wonderful time period for America – such a time of growth. Good choice for M!

  3. Boy, I’m dating myself for remembering all of this and the house of the future, plus the programs brought to us by the electric companies.
    Great glimpse into history.

  4. There were always projections of the future that are so often off track. (See 1939 World’s Fair for several.)

  5. Thank you for this post and the link to the video! In the meantime we have learnt that we are too dependent on electricity. Sometimes we have power-cuts and that causes a lot of inconvenience: we cannot cook , we cannot enter a shop with automatically closing and opening doors, we can’t buy anything for the ATM’s don’t work. Our fridges will defrost…TV won’t work… no radio. Well we should bear in mind, that we are still able to use the oldfashioned means of energy.
This was a great post, because it makes us think and realize that we must be inventive from time to time.
    Have a great day.

We purchased a 1959 Gold Medallion Home in Lakeside, Ca in 2011. I have been researched a great deal trying to get more detailed information on this particular subdivision but it not easy to find. I did compile a good amount of the whole Gold Medallion Homes national campaign and information behind the concept and home details as a whole. If you have any information on the builder in 1959 in 92040 zip code which is San Diego County, Lakeside, Ca I would love to get any information I can.
