Hazy Los Angeles Sunset

Last week I went to dinner at an amazingly delicious establishment in Silverlake, Black Hogg. Thank you Ayleen for this wonderful dining experience!

We arrived a little too early so backtracked down Sunset a little to spend some time at Barnsdall Park and view the exterior of Hollyhock House.

Hollyhock House is a Frank Lloyd Wright creation atop a hill in East Hollywood and though it is lovely in it’s own right the views from the surrounding grounds are real showstoppers even on a hazy evening.

North: Griffith Park Observatory

Northwest: The Hollywood sign and comm towers

West: The city and her people

ABC Wednesday In Your Garage

In keeping with my Garage and Garden theme I am sharing some vintage Cars I had the pleasure of seeing at The Grand National Roadster Show in Pomona California last weekend.

Which would you like in your garage?

IMG_0315A Copper and Cream Chevrolet Wagon perhaps?

IMG_0311Maybe a little something Chopped?

IMG_0350Or a Custom Crimson Cadillac?

IMG_0310I Choose a Cool Chevy to Cruise on a Cloudy So Cal afternoon.

Quarter Mile Drag Racing

After a horrific crash at Englishtown NJ raceway took the life of Scott Kalitta in 2008, NHRA Drag Racing has shortened the Top Fuel and Funny Car distance to 1000 feet, 320 feet short of the traditional Quarter mile of Drag Racing.  They stated at the time in July of 2008  it might be a temporary condition but for these two classes 1000 feet of track remains their finish line as of the 2013 season.

The new rule was made for good reasons with safety as the number one priority as it should be with the Top Fuel and Funny Cars of today reaching and surpassing 300mph.

Nostalgia Drag Racing is still a Quarter mile finish line since these are vintage 1950s- 1980s Top fuel and Funny cars. They are, in my opinion, the best kind of drag racing to watch. When attending a Nostalgia Drag event Fans and Racers alike are transported to a time of racing that did not have huge franchises, 3-5 car “teams” in the same class and there drivers who still wrenched on their own cars after driving to the track in their pick-up hauling their trailered race car.

You can find lots of Nostalgia drag footage  (and all kinds of cool drag racing and car show news) here:

C is for Classic Cars

This ABC Wednesday I had a wealth of photos taken this weekend at The Grand National Roadster Show since “C” is for Classic Cars.

They were all there at the Los Angeles County Fairgrounds, Chopped, Custom, Channeled, Cruisers, Convertibles and even a Couple Crew Cabs.

You may see in the previous post we had some light rain on move in day Thursday and I am here to say it continued in the on and off drizzle to downpour mode both Friday and Saturday. The sun pushed through just enough to keep it from being miserable in the afternoon so a good time was had by all.

Saturday at the GNRS is “Drive-In” day where local car guys can bring their pride and joy inside the show, park between the exhibit buildings and enjoy the prestige of taking part in “the Grandaddy” of car shows (this was the 64th year!)as more than an attendee.

The Antique, Classic and Collector vehicles spanned 3 centuries of production with Custom builds that just rolled onto the street in 2012 back to horseless Carriages from the late 1800s.

Skywatch Friday Sunday at the Grand Nationals

Happy Groundhog day everyone! Punxsutawney Phil saw his shadow and told us all there would be 6 more weeks of Winter.  Not that we have had much Winter around here so far this year, just lots of wind.  We are supposed to remain at “room temperature” around 72 as a high all weekend.

Skywatch visits the last day of the Grand National Roadster Show in Pomona California last Sunday. The sky was Blue, the air crisp and smog free with a warm 77 degree high for the day,Winter in So Cal is not so bad some years!

A pretty little truck was leaving the NHRA Museum parking lot as I was walking a show pass to the gate. Nice day for a drive!

This beautiful Kustom ’57 Ford wagon belongs to my friend ,Tommy of Diablo’s House of Style up in Bakersfield. He just finished a new paint job on it in layers of Charcoal,Gold/green metallic,Kandy Lime and Hand done flames…a lot of talent lives inside that guy!

The Kustom front end is the handy work of the legendary Bill Hines aka the Leadslinger.
